The role of presiding officer is crucial in keeping a meeting orderly, timely and productive.  A confident, well-prepared and resourceful presider can make or break a meeting, especially in the face of disruptive members and unexpected challenges. This session will focus on preparation and performance incorporating real-life examples.  Attendees will learn little known strategies for preparing for and handling argumentative members, contentious meetings and other surprises that may occur and are not covered by parliamentary authority.

Adam Hathaway, RP, is proud to be a member of the National Association of Parliamentarians since 2006 and credentialed since 2011. He is the Parliamentarian, as well as Past President of the New Mexico State Association of Parliamentarians and Past President of the Albuquerque Parliamentarian Unit. He also served on the NAP Board of Directors for four years as a Director-at-Large. Adam is a Past CEO of the Masonic Charities Foundation of New Mexico and past Grand Master of Masons in New Mexico. Adam teaches leadership and parliamentary procedure classes at the international, national, state and local levels, both in person and virtually, and has completed the NAP Train the Trainer course. His parliamentary clients include non-profit organizations; professional societies; government agencies, boards and committees; an international religious organization and a federal credit union. Adam holds a master’s degree in Public Administration and a bachelor’s degree in organizational communication.
